After being exhibited in different institutions in Brazil, Rochelle Costi’s (Caxias do Sul, 1961) installation Reprodutor [Reproducer], from 2008, is now on view at The Photographers’ Gallery, in London.

In this work, visitors are faced with reproductions of photographs by renowned artists, such as Marina Abramović, Lenora de Barros, João Castilho, Rochelle Costi, Thomas Farkas, German Lorca, João Modé, Vik Muniz, and Rosângela Rennó; drawing materials; and ‘reproduction desks’ – tables with transparent, ‘darkroom red’, upright dividers, designed by the artist herself, that reflect images. In this scenario, visitors are invited to draw one or more of the available photos, translate them into drawing, which, once completed, can then be exhibited with the reproductions, becoming themselves “originals”, in a paradoxical procedure.

Rochelle Costi fuses the mechanics of the camera with that of the human eye, suggesting that reproduction is never faithful and that reproducibility, whether mechanical or manual, is always subjective.

The installation can be visited up until June 30th, 2016. For more information, please visit the gallery’s website.
