One is the art of expression, in which a work expresses content, feelings, and emotions. The other is the art of creation, in which a work of art is seen as form.” (Waldemar Cordeiro)The development of Concrete Art in Brazil was grounded in the 1952 Manifesto Ruptura [Rupture Manifesto], written by Waldemar Cordeiro. It called for a new art based on clear and intelligent principles, a distinct sense of rationality and order, pure forms, visual clarity, and dynamic interaction between form and color – rejecting all forms of naturalism, from Expressionism to Surrealism. In line with Gestalt principles, the whole is more important than the parts: it is the complete composition that engages the viewer’s senses, allowing the work to be absorbed through layered interpretation, from immediate visual impact to deeper emotional and cultural resonance.“Vejo a arte concreta como uma arte totalmente criativa. Tanto na arte figurativa quanto na não figurativa em geral, entendo como duas tendências opostas fundamentais. Uma é a arte da expressão, na qual uma obra expressa conteúdos, sentimentos e emoções. O desenvolvimento da Arte Concreta no Brasil teve suas bases em 1952 com o Manifesto Ruptura, escrito por Waldemar Cordeiro, que clamava por uma nova arte baseada em princípios claros e inteligentes, um distinto senso de racionalidade e ordem, formas puras, clareza visual e interação dinâmica entre as formas e cores, rejeitando qualquer tipo de naturalismo – do expressionismo ao surrealismo. Seguindo princípios da Gestalt, o todo é mais importante do que as partes, sendo o conjunto completo da composição o que irá envolver os sentidos de quem a observa, fazendo assimilar a informação por meio de níveis de interpretação, desde a visualidade primeira até nossas emoções e repertórios próprios.
