Anna Maria Maiolino

The work of Anna Maria Maiolino, developed over more than six decades, stands out for its continuous and sensitive investigation of the body, language, materiality, and everyday experience, often articulating political and urban aspects. Her multidisciplinary and multimedia practice places emphasis on artistic processes and on the direct dialogue with materials, which become agents of ideas and expression. The artist’s migratory background (she was born in Italy, with a period in Venezuela before settling in Brazil, where she later became a naturalized citizen) also plays a central role in her work, reflected in themes such as identity, memory, and belonging. Recognized as one of the most influential figures in contemporary art, Anna Maria Maiolino was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2024.

 

She has used drawing throughout her trajectory, returning to it as a site of experimentation where the line becomes a way of thinking through movement. The series Vestígios [Vestiges] (2003) presents drawings made of modular marks and brief strokes that connect to form graphic images, revealing the artist’s gestural imprint as a trace of her creative presence. The works in the series Trans-cursos [Trans-courses] (2013) trace out paths of transit and passage, functioning as records of movement through the lines and connections that form the labyrinth.
