Niura Bellavinha: Fluidos e Fluxos
Luciana Brito Galeria opens a solo exhibition by Niura Bellavinha entitled Fluidos e Fixos. The artist shows new works exclusively created for this show, including paintings, videos and photos.
In her first solo exhibition at Luciana Brito Galeria, the artist occupies the space with paintings from the series Fluidos e Fixos. Niura Bellavinha shows her known painting technique with dry pigments applied on linen and later attacked by jets of water and compressed air to dye the fabric, pushing the color across the canvas. This time, however, she mentions that "in addition to being made of fluids, they are fluids themselves, in waves, seas, waterfalls, rivers and lakes. As a reference to the Japanese painting and printing of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries”.
Niura Bellavinha comments: "I begin with a dense mass of ink and then I will open it with a jet of water or compressed air. I come to work as opposed to the tradition of painting, because I'm removing the paint that is there. (...)" Niura Bellavinha’s painting became thicker, with consistent overlays of paint, gaining mass in the series Fluidos e Fixos.
The video Performed Painting 6 – INFILTRAÇÃO, shows one of the paintings from the exhibition in the moment of its creation. This video is projected onto a canvas and fragmented on the floor of the room through the reflection of small mirrors, debating again the many possible ways of making a painting. InPerformed Painting 1 – Vestígios-Guignard, a red kite alludes to her own painting when it is translucent, creating a range of reddish shades that form with light and shadow. Finally,Performed Painting 1 - Guara, is the documentation of the "dust sculpture" by the artist, a whirlpool in intense red.
The exhibition catalog includes an interview by critic Fernanda Lopes, who mentions that "new paintings reinforce the artist’s program of research, investigating pictorial possibilities based on what the artist calls paintings/films, paintings/photos, paintings/installations, paintings/urban interferences, paintings/performances, and even some works that use fluids directly from nature.(...) She has since gone on to produce works using waterfalls, rain, storms, winds, clouds, tides and reflecting pools as the impetus for artworks that seek to construct an unlikely stability based on the uncertainty of existence."
