    Wood is an important element in Afonso Tostes’s research, not only for its symbolic resonance and origin, but also for its formal qualities. Values related to sustainability and the environment underpin his practice. In Untitled (2024), Tostes combines variously colored wood dust – a byproduct of sanding his sculptures – with acrylic paint to create chromatic nuances. The idea of stacking the canvases arises from the artist’s recent investigations into balance, in which a small wooden branch provides a delicate adjustment of weight.
