Leandro Erlich

Leandro Erlich explores the devices of visuality through games of perception and the senses. The architecture of everyday life is a recurring theme in his work, through which he creates paradoxes between what we believe and what we see. Through installations, sculptures, photographs, and videos, the artist simulates situations that unsettle our everyday experience and our understanding of the ordinary.

In Rowing Boat (Captive Reflections) (2013), Leandro Erlich turns a simple rowboat into a mechanism of illusion. The work simulates the presence of a vessel on water, creating an essentially optical situation that displaces an everyday object into an unexpected context. The reflection – ordinarily fleeting and conditioned by the movement of water and light – is here captured and made permanent, reinforcing the artist’s interest in the mechanisms of perception and the instability between reality and representation.
