Caio Reisewitz

Caio Reisewitz’s (São Paulo, 1967) first solo show at Luciana Brito Galeria’s, Aterro [Landfill], opens on September 3rd, 2016 (Saturday). Curated by Guilherme Wisnik, the show features eight new photographs realized at Aterro do Flamengo, Rio de Janeiro, one of the most famous landscape designs by Burle Marx.

Caio Reisewitz’s Landfill is an oneiric landscape, as if seen by someone half-asleep, where day and night can’t be distinguished. The fantastic shades of the nightly images derive of the Landfill’s artificial lights, and the resulting tones establish a dialogue with the first colored photographs produced by Marc Ferrez in 1914 – another reference for this project.

The São Paulo based artist deals with architectonic and landscape heritages of Brazilian modernity, creating slightly delusional encounter between the exuberance of the tropical nature and the sober lines of modern construction. Now, in Aterro, his dialogue with architecture escalates to the urban scale. We don’t see people or buildings on these photos, only a projected and built nature under a particular night light.

This giant garden that became florest, where even the full moon is mimethized by gigantic light poles hidden by the tree tops, appears as the epitome of the construction of reality, of nature as simulacrum.

Caio Reisewitz has recently presented solo shows at renowned international institutions, such as the ICP - Internacional Center for Photography (New York, 2014), Huis Marseille Museum voor Fotografie (Amsterdam, 2015), and Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris, 2015). Last year, also in Paris, he presented the solo show Plantes, Pavillions et Pétrole [Plants, Pavilions and Oil]. In 2007, he was one of the Brazilian representatives at the 51st Venice Biennale.

Featuring only new works, Caio Reisewitz’s solo show– Aterro [Landfill] – portraits the landscape design of the Aterro do Flamengo with a unique look. The curatorship is signed by Guilherme Wisnik.
